Mordecai awoke in the hospital. It was dark and all he could hear was the steady beeps and bops of the various equipment that was hooked up to him.
“Hello?” He called.
“Is anyone there?”
Riff was sleeping on a chair next to her brother’s bed, waking…
"No… That lookalike of yours somehow injected you with a horse tranquilizer… You fell unconscious and with the help of those bikers we met, we managed to get you an ambulance." She explained. "The lookalike escaped though… says he’s truly you, but I didn’t believe him."
Mordecai sighed and put his hand on Riffs head. Stroking her hair.
"He is me… From an alternate tangent"
Mordecai continued to stroke her hair.
"How long have I been out?"
She looked up at her brother… This lookalike was from the future? “… About 3-4 hours, give or take. Don’t worry about the cart, the bikers I befriended took it to their club house to keep it safe until we return.” She gently nuzzled the Bluejay’s chest. “I’m glad you’re safe, brother.”
"The bikers?" Mordecai looked confused.
"The ones that threw a can at me?"
"Yes, they actually tried to help me with the future you when I fought him… And got an ambulance when you passed out." She responded quietly. "He actually tried to choke me twice… And then escaped via smokescreen… He’s going to pay for hurting you."
"Did he hurt you?" Mordecai looked at her.
"He’s very strong, more than likely a better and more experienced fighter than me too…"
"Yeah, but I fought back." She rubbed her throat, where the future Mordecai gripped her. "The next time we meet him, you’ll have the honor of using my hidden blade on him." She reached into her messenger bag, grabbing a new assassin gauntlet. "Here, I fixed it for you to use."
Mordecai’s eyes widened at the gift.
"Thank you Riff!"
He held his arm out for her to strap the gauntlet to.
"When am I able to leave?"
She straps on the gauntlet on his arm. “I’ll get the doctor to check up on you now… Try not to hurt anyone with it.” She pats his head, walking over to get the doctor.
The doctor was making notes on a clipboard when Riff approached her.
"Yes ma’am?" The doctor asked. Without raising her eyes from her work.
"Mordecai just woke up, sir… can you do a check up on him?"
"Sure" the doctor put the clipboard down and walked over to Mordecai’s bed.
He got a torch from his pocket and shone it in his eye. First one, then the other.
"Do you feel light headed or sick?" The doctor asked as he did this.
Mordecai winced as the light shone into his eyes.
"No I feel ok"
"So… How much horse tranquilizer was injected into him, doctor? Did you get rid of it?" Riff asked, standing on the other side of her brother’s bed.
"His body will do it for us…" The doctor put the torch away.
"You can leave tomorrow morning at the earliest"
Mordecai groaned and slumped back on the bed.
"…Very well. Thank you, doctor." Riff bowed to him in respect. "Don’t worry, Mords. Just be patient, ok?"
